Master of Orion II - Battle at Antares

Lord Brazen's Game Review

Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares is an epic turn-based fantasy strategy game which was first released way back in 1997. For those that enjoy games that are focused on tactics, strategy, and diplomacy, Master of Orion II is a good place to start.

Whether in the thick of battle or viewing a cut scene, the visuals were pretty impressive for its day. The 640x480 screen resolution is a little limited by today`s standards, but the implementation works well and it gives plenty of life to this classic series.

The basic premises of the game are to create an empire, develop technology, and eventually build an invasion fleet against rivals who are seeking to do the same.

Master of Orion II offers game play against up to 7 opponents. The game has excellent multiplayer support with hot seat, modem, serial link, and LAN games. You can choose any combination of human or AI opponents.

There are thirteen standard races to choose from but most veteran players design a custom race. There is a large array of race customization options available allowing players to customize their race to match their playing style.... FULL REVIEW

Remaining bug list.

Today, I am trying to put together a list of remaining bugs in Master of Orion II v1.40. I am only listing those that I have seen on my PC as those are the ones I most likely can fix in the near future.

Bug list:

  • Buildings that yield production bonuses sometimes do not apply the bonus correctly in the turn that the building is produced. Moving workers in that turn can result in the bonus being lost temporarily.
  • Missile stacks with a quantity of zero are sometimes generated when attempting to shoot down missiles. This zero stack will proceed to target but will do no damage. They can however trigger the automatic firing of pd weapons thus waisting the firing round.
  • When 2 or more players arrive at a system for the first time the systems special will be awarded to only one player.
  • When changing a colonists profession during a move from one planet to another, the destination colonies population limit in not checked correctly.
  • Ships equiped with phasing cloak and time warp facilitator can re-cloak in the same combat round in which they fire weapons.
  • Ships are not immobilized by tractor beams or blackhole generators until the beginning of the next combat round. This allows them to move when they should not be able to.
  • Outposts are often destroyed in strategic combat even when the defender wins combat.
  • Annihilation can result in a planet with zero population which is impossible to invade or bomb.
  • Under certain circumstances the combat round with a monster is ignored. Sometimes monsters or ships which were destroyed in combat are still alive after combat. This seems to be a network game problem only.
  • Retreating from combat can result in loss of your entire fleet if there is a black hole in the retreat path even if you have a navigator.
  • Travel distance and ETA are not calculated correctly in some situations.
  • It is possible to change some race picks that you should not be able to once you have researched Evolutionary Mutation.
  • When a colony ship and outpost ship are present with your fleet, sometimes you will not be given the option to land your outpost ship. This seems to occur in systems with no habitable worlds.
  • Autobuild can be exploited to produce an item and trade goods in the same turn.
  • Shield generators repaired during combat do not function correctly.
  • You cannot demand or trade optronics computer technology.
  • Some stolen technologies do not apply until you build a new colony or outpost.

If you have any bugs to add to this list feel free to post them in the comments.

Moo2v140b23 patch released

I have released the Moo2v140b23 patch today. I made a number of changes in order to improve the stability of the game. Hopefully these changes with help reduce the number of crashes during gameplay.

The fixes are as follows:

  • Corrected a problem with the /nohousing switch which could cause it to only apply to players that had the switch on their command line. All players should now receive the settings from the host.
  • Corrected another problem where the /nohousing switch could override the settings stored in a saved game when loaded. This included the stored settings for some other switches. Now the settings should be loaded from the save game file and command line switches should not have and effect on a loaded game.
  • Fixed a problem with black hole generators that caused them not to destroy ships when ship initiative was enabled.
  • Fixed a problem in a display redraw routing that sometimes resulted in memory outside the VESA display memory window to be overwritten. This bug could cause random crashes and lockups.
  • Fixed another problem with a display redraw routing that sometimes resulted in memory outside of the video frame buffers to be overwritten. This could cause parts of the save game to become corrupted, random crashes, and other strange behavior.
  • Fixed a problem that could cause the game to crash when a player was using tractor beams.

Site maintenance completed.

I have been doing a little maintenance on this website as well has the Kali League Ladder website over the past little while. I believe things are mostly completed. The ladder is running and people seem to be using it again.

Here is a list of what has been fixed on the Ladder site:

  • People could not find where to login on the Ladder. The login option did not appear on the main page of the site if you deleted your cookies.
  • People could not navigate the site properly if they did not have internet explorer. Most other web browsers did not display the site correctly.
  • Some of the tables overflowed and as a result the pages did not display correctly.
  • Some users had problems with their ELO ranking on the Ladder(partly fixed)

I also updated my blog and forum:
  • The forum software needed some security updates.
  • The blog site had some minor html coding problems in the downloads page. This caused many articles from the blog not to be indexed by Google. Now all articles can be found through google search.
  • Improved the sites page rank by registering in several internet directories.
  • Added a new download. A nice moo2 editor.

Hopefully we will see more visitors in the near future...

Antarian Ship Designs

Today, I have been taking a brief look at Antarian ship designs with the hopes of eventually modifying them to make them a stronger opponent. In the game there are two types of ships generated by the Antarians. Those that are for defending the Antarian homeworld and those that are for Attacking the other players. There are currently only slight differences in the designs.

I have summarized the designs in the following tables:

Moo2 Antarian Defensive ship designs

Moo2 Antarian Offensive ship designs

In my opinion these ships are to weak and their attacks are to infrequent to matter. It is far to easy to stop the Antarian invasions even early in the game. The small ships are easily destroyed with missiles due to lack of pd weapons and the large ships don't come early enough.

I am currently working on a mod to change a few things with the antarians. I hope to include the following:

  • Increase Antarian attack frequency.
  • Increase attack fleet size.
  • Add pd weapons to small attack ships.
  • Significantly increase Antarian defensive fleet.
  • Put missile bases, ground batteries, and stellar converter on Antares.
This will probably be in the form of a separate (optional) patch.

Moo2v140 LAN games under Windows XP Home

It is fairly difficult to setup a DOS LAN game on Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Home has no DOS mode networking support at all and even network support for windows applications is restricted.

Start by installing Master of Orion II v1.40. Just follow the regular Installation on Windows XP instructions.

In order to play LAN games of Master of Orion II v1.40, XP Home users will need to install a Novell Netware client. However, Novell does not officially support Windows XP Home edition. Some versions of Novell Netware client will definitely crash your system. Some will work partly.

The version of Novell Netware client that I have had some success with is "Novell Client 4.91 SP2". I make no guarantees that it will work for you. Novell makes no guarantees that it will work or won't crash. It is up to you if you want to try it.

Follow these steps if you want to install it:

1. Download it from here Here.
2. Run the self extractor. Make note of the folder where it is extracting. Change the folder name if you want to. Click unzip. 409 files should be extracted successfully.
3. Open My Computer. Browse to the folder noted above and then into "Novell Client 4.91 SP2 English" folder. Double click "setupnw" to run the installer.
4. Agree to license agreement & click next.
5. Choose "Custom Install" & click next.
6. Novell Client for windows is already selected so just click next.
7. Uncheck "Novell Modular Authentication Services" (so nothing is selected) & click next.
8. Select "IPX" (only) as the protocol & click next.
9. Select "NDS" & click next.
10. Select Finish. Wait for it to install. Then choose the option to Reboot when finished.

Upon reboot, you will get a Novell login screen. To log in, choose "Workstation Only". Your username should appear now in the box. Leave it. There should be no password unless you made one. Press ok.

You will need to edit the c:\windows\system32\autoexec2.nt file and change as shown below. The lines in bold will need to be added and the lines referring to Kali should be removed to avoid conflict.
